What to do if your pet goes missing

Lost / stray dogs:

As you may be aware, from the 1st of April 2008 the control of stray dogs became the sole responsibility of the local authority by virtue of Section 68 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 thus removing the responsibility for stray dogs from the Police. It has NEVER been the responsibility of the RSPCA. Gwynedd Council have recently reviewed their procedure in respect of dealing with stray dogs. Following the review, the procedure of Gwynedd Council in respect of dealing with stray dogs is as follows:

Stray Dog Control - Council Office Hours

If a stray dog is found during the Council's office hours (08:30 - 16:00 Monday - Friday except Bank Holidays) please contact them on:

Phone: 01766 771000 E-mail: K9@gwynedd.gov.uk

One of their wardens will collect the dog as soon as possible and take the dog to one of the following kennels:

Aber Falls Kennels, Abergwyngregyn http://www.aberfallskennels.co.uk/

Hengwrt Kennels, Dolgellau

Nant y Corn, Abergele http://www.nantycorn.com/

Stray Dog Control - Out of hours

The Council is currently unable to offer an out of hours stray dogs collection service. If however, a stray dog is found outside Council office hours, a person may either keep it safe until the next working day, when the dog warden will collect the dog, or take it at their own expense and in their own transport to their out of hours reception kennels which are as follows:

Aber Falls Kennels, Abergwyngregyn, Tel: 01248 680769

Hengwrt Kennels, Dolgellau, Tel: 01341 422597.

The reception centres are available from 09:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 – 21:00 Saturday to Sunday.

A prior arrangement MUST be made by telephone with the kennel operator before a stray dog can be taken in.
